2020 in review: PackagingInsights’ most read stories: In an unprecedented year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced major changes in the packaging industry. Plastics packaging proved vital in preserving food freshness amid disrupted supply chains and heightened hygiene concerns. Meanwhile, e-commerce sales went through the roof, driving demand for corrugated packaging solutions, particularly in home food delivery. Manufacturers turned increasingly to automation and robotics to maintain essential packaging production as workplace restrictions threatened the industry. Brick and mortar trade shows were a big casualty, with event organizers exploring virtual alternatives throughout the year.
The packaging industry demonstrated resilience during pandemic adversity, continuing its journey toward the circular economy and more environmentally-sustainable packaging solutions. Recycle-by-design flexible packaging produced several world-firsts while the incorporation of recycled resins in rigid plastic applications became common in soft drinks and other markets. Fossil plastic-alternative solutions also grew in sophistication, with bioplastic, paper-based and reusable metal packaging solutions increasing in availability.
