In 2022, the packaging industry endured turbulence as recycled plastics prices soared and the Ukraine war sent energy prices skyrocketing. Biodegradable plastics became more relevant as producers increasingly sought new materials for their products. Meanwhile, the EU declared a blanket ban on harmful chemicals such as PFAS but braced for pushback from the petrochemical industry. Also, scandals erupted over suspected arson at Turkish recycling facilities and over TerraCycle’s suspected use of a criminal waste handler to export its trash abroad for incineration.
