Canadian Food Inspection Agency recalls Veg-e Protein products due to defective packaging
01 Oct 2018 --- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled from the marketplace several Arctic Gardens brand Veg-e Protein products due to defective packaging. The FIA has concerns that the defective packaging may allow for pieces of the plastic zipper seal to fall into the product during microwaving.
The food recall warning issued on September 27, 2018, has been updated to include additional distribution and product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) food safety investigation.
The recalled Arctic Garden products are as follows: Veg-e Protein – Macaroni and Cauliflower; Veg-e Protein – Orzo and Green Chick Peas; Veg-e Protein – Quinoa and Soy Beans.
The recall was initially triggered by the company itself, Bonduelle Canada. It has been reported that the investigation may lead to the recall of further products. The CFIA has warned consumers not to consume the recalled products. There have not been any reported injuries caused by the defected packaging to date.
Potential human health implications of plastic
Concerns around the human health implications of plastic packaging are on the rise. Last month, researchers at Washington State University found that bisphenol A (BPA) alternatives used in “BPA-free” bottles, cups, cages and other items were found to cause reproductive problems in mice.
The researchers noted that the initial inadvertent exposure of their animals was remarkably similar to what might happen in people using plastics, in that the exposure was accidental and highly variable. “BPA-free” or not, plastic products that show signs of damage or aging cannot be considered safe, the researchers warned.
The impact of plastics on human wellbeing was brought into the spotlight amid the microplastics discovery by New Orb Media, leading the World Health Organization to implement a health review of the potential harms of plastics on humans.
