Smurfit Kappa designs egg-protector pack for E-commerce delivery
05 Jul 2019 --- Through its eSmart solutions service, Smurfit Kappa has designed a unique packaging solution to enable Granja Mantiqueira, a Latin American egg provider, to enter the E-commerce channel. Styled like a briefcase with handles for carrying, the unique packaging keeps the eggs fresh and secure throughout the supply chain. From a sustainability perspective, a compact form allows for more packs to be transported, the company notes. The boxes are marketed as being 100 percent recyclable, biodegradable and renewable.
The innovative packaging is in response to Granja Mantiqueira’s decision to launch a new “Egg Club” service, through which consumers can order eggs online for home delivery in Brazil. The company enlisted Smurfit Kappa to come up with a solution, aware that packaging plays a critically important role for the E-commerce channel, especially for a product as fragile as eggs.
“We reviewed all aspects of Mantiqueira’s supply chain to ensure that all products were delivered in perfect condition with no damage or breakages,” says Manuel Alcalá, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Brazil. “Made from paper-based packaging, the packs we created are optimized for the E-commerce sales channel, meeting the needs of customers looking for faster and more efficient delivery to their homes.”
“The fragile nature of eggs was a key factor in this project. We took a data-driven approach and used our eSmart service tools to design a fit-for-purpose and attractive packaging solution,” he notes.
“We identified a big interest for this idea of receiving eggs at home, so we decided to offer an additional channel to consumers who are looking for a more practical solution for their daily lives,” says Leandro Pinto, Founding Partner of the Mantiquiera Group. “Smurfit Kappa worked with us to come up with a sustainable packaging solution which delivered against a number of briefs including emphasizing the premium quality of the eggs.”
Smurfit Kappa was awarded both the “Cool Vendor” and “Sustainability” awards at the 2019 Deliver event held in Lisbon, Portugal in June in Lisbon, Portugal this year. The event is one of the largest eCommerce logistics events in Europe. During the awarding ceremony, companies presented a diverse range of E-commerce services and products to C-suite representatives from 750 of the world’s leading retailers.
