FachPack 2019 in Nuremberg, Germany, attracted around 44,000 visitors and 1,591 exhibitors in a year where the show declared its first-ever official key theme: Sustainability. The 12 exhibition halls demonstrated that the search for increased sustainability is a multi-faceted challenge and one that cannot be overcome with a single solution or a particular material. The rush to abandon “public enemy number one” plastic has evolved into a more considered approach in which all packs are assessed by the environmental impact of their entire lifecycle in relation to the specific applications they package. Global plastic pollution is a problem nobody can deny, and FachPack evidenced that innovation in plastic recyclability continues to go from strength to strength, particularly in mono-material films. Meanwhile, fiber-based solutions continue to offer increasingly feasible alternatives to plastics while suppliers also expand their offering of reusable and returnable packaging options.
