According to Chemical Data Inc., the record cost of polypropylene resin is not a temporary phenomenon and is expected to be $.69 to $.70 per pound for the balance of the year. This represents an increase of $.27 per pound since the beginning of 2004. Energy and transportation costs have also increased approximately $.03 per pound further impacting film costs. The oriented polypropylene industry was operating at historically low margins at the beginning of 2004, and therefore, these costs must be recovered if the industry is to remain viable.
