Australia's liquor industry funded organization, DrinkWise Australia, in partnership with alcohol producers, will unveil a national voluntary campaign to put health warning label on majority of alcoholic beverage products in an endeavor to prevent excessive drinking in the country.
The campaign is an education and awareness program designed to change the country's drinking culture.
The companies participating in this program represent 80% of the alcoholic beverages (by volume) sold in the country. The participants in the campaign include Carlton United Breweries (Foster's Australia), Diageo Australia, Pernod Ricard's Premium Wine Brands, Brown-Forman Australia, Beam Global Australia and Bacardi Lion, among others.
A majority of alcoholic drinks, such as beer, wine and spirits, will sport the warning labels, targeted especially at pregnant women and teens, according to Trish Worth, chair of DrinkWise Australia.
Worth noted that 61% of consumers surveyed said they would support the idea of information messages on alcohol labels and 32% told they would be likely to seek more information about responsible drinking as a result of seeing a label message.
The labels will primarily feature, Get the facts, the core message which encourages beverage drinkers and customers to go to the organization's website, where they will be provided proper guidance and information on alcohol and its effects.
"It's widely recognized that labels alone will not change consumer behavior and that they must be part of broader education initiatives to make an impact- which is why we have coupled the messages with a pointer to our website, and why we will continue to support them through our ongoing educational efforts," she added.
The core message would be used in conjunction with other messages that warn kids, pregnant woman and alcohol dependents.
In addition to these label messages, the initiative also includes distribution of educational materials to consumers in outlets that sell alcohol.
