09 Nov 2018 --- Ardagh Group has collaborated with Norway seafood brand Stabburet to deliver a revamped, lively design for its classic aluminum seafood cans. The project targeted Stabburet’s mackerel fillet range – a national dish in Norway – and presented sixty different designs on the Hansa shaped seafood can – the typical aluminum can with rounded edges used for seafood.
06 Nov 2018 --- A new and innovative atmospheric cold plasma (CP)-based antimicrobial packaging system has been shown to significantly increase shelf-life and safety in poultry breast meat. The US Department of Agricultural Research Service (ARS) developed the packaging system which uses high electrical voltages to generate plasma with ozone and other bactericidal components within sealed food packages. There are a number of advantages with this packaging system compared to alternative treatments, such as eliminating pre-packaging treatment requirements, adaptability for use with any size and type of package and treatment time, having no chemical residues after treatment, and cost-effectiveness.
24 Oct 2018 --- Coveris has combined sustainable sourcing, plastics reduction and improved recyclability to deliver a fully-circular skinboard tray for UK supermarket Morrisons’ fresh meat products. The 50 percent plastic reduction supports both the retailer’s sustainability goals and the manufacturer’s UK Plastics Pact commitments. More sustainable from source, the packs offer a significantly lower carbon footprint as they are made from over 75 percent renewable materials.
25 Sep 2018 --- Mondi has produced a resealable, easy-open pack for Orkla’s iconic Vossafår sliced cured meat which includes a multilayer barrier film capable of resisting curling at the temperatures used in the thermoforming line. Norway’s Orkla Group challenged Mondi to create a pack that enhanced consumer convenience while reducing food waste. Users peel the package from the bottom and take the portion they want. When they are done, they reseal the pack by simply pressing down on label.

13 Aug 2018 --- Sealpac’s FlatSkin pack combines extended shelf-life and enhanced design appeal with a plastic reduction of up to 75 percent. Danish seafood processor Vega Salmon A/S is one of the early adopters of the FlatSkin packaging system for its hot-smoked salmon products. The products are manufactured on a Sealpac A10 traysealer with 8-impression tooling for cardboard carriers measuring 260 x 130 mm. Each carrier has a double-sided print and hanger hole, which, combined with Sealpac’s unique OnTrayCut system, allow for an attractive vertical presentation at retail.
06 Jul 2018 --- Food packaging innovators Sirane has launched a new microwavable pack which is capable of crisping bacon precisely to the preference of the individual consumer. The consumer need only adjust the cooking times to adjust the levels of crispiness. An absorbent board within the pack absorbs the hot fat released by the bacon during microwaving, ensuring ideal taste and texture every time.
05 Jul 2018 --- An X-ray inspection system from Ishida is enabling German meat and sausage manufacturer Goldschmaus Natur to meet the highest quality standards required for the export of its Frankfurter sausages to Japan. The patented technology behind Ishida’s X-ray inspection systems is based on software incorporating an intelligent genetic algorithm which checks for contaminants in the meat.
03 Jul 2018 --- Food safety regulators are highlighting potential contamination issues as food business operators try to manage their carbon dioxide supply amid a shortage in the gas. The possible food safety issues can relate to the quality of “food grade” carbon dioxide, as CO2 can be a potential source of contamination in food. Therefore, carbon dioxide used in food or in contact with food must be fit for purpose, says both the Food Standards Agency of the UK and Ireland.
26 Jun 2018 --- UK supermarket chain, Morrisons, will encourage shoppers to bring their own plastic containers to the meat and fish counter in exchange for 100 loyalty card points, the equivalent of 10 pence. The move comes as part of a series of pledges to reduce plastic pollution, including guarantees that all own-brand plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
12 Jun 2018 --- Meat-free food producer, Quorn, plans to remove 297 tons of non-recyclable black plastic from its supply chain. The move comes as part of the brand’s ambitions to achieve 100 percent recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025. Quorn claims that their elimination of black plastics is a UK first from a major food brand and one that will help reinforce their identity as a leader in sustainable nutrition.
06 Jun 2018 --- Plastic nanoparticles – which are tiny pieces of plastic less than 1 micrometer in size – could potentially contaminate food chains, ultimately affecting human health, a study conducted at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found. The study found that such nanoplastics are easily ingested by marine life and accumulate over time. This creates a risk of transference to the human food chain. They suggest this could threaten food safety and pose health risks.

16 Apr 2018 --- UK supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s, has announced plans to sell raw meat in touch-free packaging to meet the growing demand of the millennial consumer. The straight-to-pan plastic pouches – commonly known as “doypacks” within the industry – allow customers to cook raw meats without directly touching the product.
10 Apr 2018 --- Zinc nanoparticles that are present in tinned foods may negatively affect how the digestive tract operates, as they are absorbed into the bloodstream, a study has found. Researchers at Binghamton University, State University at New York, found that the nanoparticles may decrease nutrient absorption in digestion, as well as bump up the levels of zinc in the food itself to 100 times the daily allowance. The long-term effect on human health is unknown and is something that warrants future research, the researchers state.
