GPI supplies Picadeli with recyclable paperboard lids for salad bowls
23 Aug 2023 --- Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has partnered with Picadeli to develop a new range of plastic-free paperboard lids for its paper-based salad bowls. The new lids are recyclable in household paper waste streams and are made from renewable plant-based fiber sourced from sustainably managed forests.
Through GPI’s paperboard lids, Picadeli can replace its plastic lids line, eliminating 250 metric tons of plastic annually from its supply chain.
The innovation offers a secure snap closure system that represents an upgrade from Picadeli’s previous solution. The healthy eating outlet can now offer a salad bowl and lid combination that is plastic-free and offers “excellent” functionality, meeting consumers’ demands.
“The new lids offer the functionality required for Picadeli to eliminate plastic salad bowl lids from their supply chain. They also offer great branding benefits via high-quality printing onto the lid using water-based inks,” says Åke Larsson, managing director of GPI Tibro AB – the site involved in designing and producing the innovation.
Picadeli added bold messages to the lids, enticing consumers to engage with the brand – an “important benefit” as it is the market-leading healthy fast-food outlet in Europe and the US, with over 2000 salad bars across Europe.
During the development of the new lid solution, the fiber-based consumer packaging giant optimized the design to ensure it remained rigid in chilled and moisture-rich environments.
“We’re honored to play a part in the sustainability efforts of brands like Picadeli,” continues Larsson. “Only by developing excellent fiber-based packaging can we help to make a difference to our planet, and it’s a challenge that everyone at GPI is proud to rise to.”
Henrik Åkerman, head of sourcing and supply chain at Picadeli, says: “We value the health of our planet as much as we value healthy eating. We are committed to preserving as many of our planet’s precious resources as possible and producing high-quality, functional packaging for our consumers to enjoy.”
“We are delighted to introduce this new lid to our packaging. It fulfills all our needs and helps us reduce the amount of plastic in our portfolio, in line with modern consumer demands.”
Fiber news
Last year, Picadeli partnered with Stora Enso for renewable formed fiber lids to replace single-use plastics in takeaway packaging. The lids are made of PureFiber by Stora Enso, plastic-free, recyclable and biodegradable.
The partnership with Stora Enso enabled Picadeli to reduce approximately 120 metric tons of plastic waste annually.
“The PureFiber lids are produced in Sweden from wood fibers from sustainably managed forests. We have perfected the design of the lids to fit the bowls perfectly, and they even come with a ‘click’ sound that helps consumers know the lid is properly attached to the bowl,” Sohrab Kazemahvazi, senior vice president for Formed Fiber at Stora Enso, told Packaging Insights.
Meanwhile, Ranpak Holdings launched a thermal liner branded RecyCold climaliner designed to support cold chain shipping needs across various end markets. The product is composed of a paper-based thermal liner that ensures products stay within their ideal temperature range for up to 48 hours while assuring recyclability.
