Leaf's subsidiary Karkkikatu has delivered a unique new sales concept to the candy market. The "Fun Cup" is based on an innovative packaging solution, which provides opportunities for pick-and-mix candy to be sold in completely new locations, such as personnel restaurants and service stations. The paperboard cups, manufactured from Stora Enso's Cupforma board, form an essential part of this exciting new concept. The new application for paperboard cups has been enthusiastically adopted by many major customers. "Thanks to its neat and visible selling rack and easy pricing method, the Fun Cup concept lends itself to all kinds of outlets. Consumers pick the candies in cups, which have fixed prices and EAN codes, thus no weighing or price tags are needed," explains Yrsa Wilén, Business Unit Manager for Karkkikatu Oy. The attractively designed cups are strong, user-friendly, reclosable, and hygienic. New applications for cupstock The paperboard cups are manufactured by Huhtamaki Oy from Stora Enso's Cupforma board, which is a 3-layer baseboard based on pure chemical pulps. To obtain optimal barrier, sealing and printing properties, all Cupforma grades are coated with thin layers of various polymer compounds. Pick-and-mix candy cups from Karkkikatu are helping cupstock to penetrate completely new areas of application, in addition to the board's traditional use in the production of beverage containers. Stora Enso Consumer Boards, the leading cupstock producer in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, sees major potential for this versatile product in the candy, snacks and soups markets. "In today's highly competitive environment, packaging can make the difference. Cup adds value to a brand through its user-friendliness and innovative design," says Seppo Kiiski, Vice President, Stora Enso Consumer Boards. The significance of packaging is widely recognized throughout the CSM Group, to which Karkkikatu and Leaf belong. "Packaging is essential because it contributes to the usability of the product. Fun Cup is an attractive and functional concept, which meets the growing interest of consumers in buying candy, regardless of time and place," concludes Yrsa Wilén. Leaf has also started to sell other established brands in cups, such as TV Mix, the popular candy blend in Finland, and Tupla, the market's best-selling chocolate bar.
