Mondi arms Henkel with refillable pump dispenser for dishwashing brand Pril
10 Feb 2022 --- Mondi is equipping Henkel with a “keep-at-home” refillable pump dispenser for its hand dishwashing products, which can be used to refill plastic bottles from flexible pouches also produced by the packaging giant.
This innovation supports Henkel’s pledge to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable and cut its fossil-based virgin plastic use by 50% by 2025.
Muriel Joncheray, global key account manager consumer flexibles at Mondi, tells PackagingInsights: “Henkel has launched a completely new packaging concept for its brand Pril. The hand dishwashing liquid is now available in a 100% recycled PET (rPET) pump dispenser bottle which can be reused many times using refills packaged in Mondi’s recyclable mono-polyethylene (PE) refill pouch. The pouches can be refilled at home.”
“The recyclable refill pouch reduces plastic by 70% every time it replaces rigid plastic bottles, meaning the rigid plastic bottle only needs to be bought once and can then be refilled many times with the pouch.”
Mondi says the pouch completely empties due to its shaped design, leaving no residue. It is soft touch with a sturdy base so it can easily stand in-store, offering retailers “attractive” and “eye-catching” on-shelf appeal while also communicating brand information, including the environmental sustainability benefits.
Furthermore, Mondi’s leak-proof pouch is certified according to ISTA 6, providing highly durable packaging for both in-store and online shopping.
The new packaging concept is being launched for Henkel’s brand Pril in Germany. It has been certified by “Blauer Engel,” the independent ecolabel of the German Federal Government that sets stringent standards for environmentally responsible products and services.
“The new refill pouch for Pril is made from mono-material PE and therefore designed for recycling. It has been launched for Germany where it is recyclable in existing infrastructure,” confirms Joncheray.
“Packaging and using less plastic for everyday household products is on top of consumer’s minds. Therefore, consumers are looking for [environmentally] sustainable refill solutions to reduce their own CO2 and plastic footprint.”
Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach
According to Joncheray, environmental sustainability is a “vital element” in the home care industry and the trend “is shaping the whole market.”
Mondi is focused on circular-driven solutions as part of its MAP2030 action plan. This includes a target to make 100% of its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
“Our EcoSolutions approach meant that we worked very closely with the Henkel team to create the new packaging. While the aim was to provide a solution that helped Henkel reach its [environmental] sustainability targets, we also needed to ensure the materials and structure would protect the product in transit and on-shelf, preventing leakage and minimizing waste,” concludes Joncheray.
Earlier this year, Mondi helped customers switch to heavy-duty corrugated packaging, bolstered by its recent acquisition of Turkish plants, allowing it to serve a broader range of industries and geographies.
At the end of last year, Iceland partnered with Mondi to improve the environmental sustainability of its product packaging. Mondi’s functional barrier paper will give the supermarket an 80% plastic usage reduction, says the company.
