Mondi equips e-commerce player Modivo with MailerBags in environmental push
10 Nov 2022 --- Mondi has collaborated with Modivo to provide it with paper-based fashion e-commerce packaging solutions. Modivo, a European online fashion retailer, switched from rigid plastic packaging to Mondi’s corrugated boxes and MailerBags.
The collaboration was solidified this month after a successful product trial earlier this year. Mondi tailored its products to Modivo’s e-commerce needs.
“Mondi is committed to partnering with our customers to find the most suitable packaging solution for their needs. When partnering with a customer, our focus is on decreasing total packaging costs, reducing waste and meeting end-consumer needs,” says Nedim Nisic, Mondi Group's e-commerce director.
“Our core strength is the combination of our sustainability expertise and an attractive e-commerce portfolio that offers fit-for-purpose packaging solutions. We can support our customer’s objective of becoming economically efficient and environmentally friendly.”

Mondi will implement its paper-based solutions across Modivo’s entire collection of shoes, bags and clothes.
Mondi’s MailerBags are made from kraft paper, allowing them to be completely reusable and recyclable. The bags are available in three designs to protect their contents while reducing the air in the bag. Less air inside packaging reduces shipping space and therefore cost.
“Mondi was able to improve our packaging considerably and support us in reaching our sustainability goals. The Mondi portfolio offers solutions that are fit for purpose, using less space and material, while still protecting the goods on their way to our customers,” expresses Łukasz Boguszewski from Modivo.
“This shift is more environmentally friendly and cost-effective for our business and reflects our commitment to meeting our customers’ expectations and consistently improving their experience.”
Going global
The bag has a flat bottom version which complements existing pinch and folded bottom bags. The design also functions with easy closing, expandability for bulkier goods and easy resealing functionality for returns.
“Our aim at Mondi is to create packaging solutions that are sustainable by design and work for the consumer, the customer and the environment – the MailerBAG range does that, offering a sustainable, easy-to-use alternative,” says Thierry De Vleminck, project manager MailerBag, Mondi.
Mondi has revealed its goal of expanding MailerBag production to approximately 350 million bags per year. According to the company, if the bags are used to replace standard plastic mailers at this scale, it has the potential to substitute approximately 7,000 metric tons of plastic per year. Modivo asks Mondi to help switch shipments to environmentally sustainable solutions.
“The global market for e-commerce packaging was worth US$49 billion, according to Smithers Pira, in 2020, and it is expected to continue to grow strongly, driving demand for sustainable, flexible packaging solutions,” De Vleminck concludes.
Fiber production
Mondi’s manufacturing and production capacities are integrated across the value chain. It manages forests and produces pulp, paper and films to develop and manufacture sustainable consumer and industrial packaging solutions using paper.
A few months ago, Mondi agreed to sell its largest Russian paper plant, Syktyvkar, to Augment Investments Limited, an investment vehicle majority owned by billionaire Viktor Kharitonin, for RUB 95 billion (around US$1.6 billion).
The sale followed a series of logistical and ethical problems thrown up by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which Mondi said made it “profoundly concerned about the war in Ukraine and shocked by the humanitarian impact.”
