A new data monitoring system designed to manage hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) is faster and easier to use than paper-based systems, claims its developer SAFAS, a consultancy in food hygiene and health and safety.
Its i-SAFAS device is a PDA-based software solution specifically designed for use in the food industry with applications in: manufacturing, distribution, event catering, public sector, retail and hospitality.
The system is intended to help food and beverage firms comply with their legal obligations under the HACCP food safety management system.
Powerful tool
John Goodwin, the firm’s director, said that the system “… is a powerful tool that enables production managers/supervisors to rapidly identify and address any shortcomings in their HACCP food safety management programme.”
The device monitors the critical control points through each stage of production and distribution and highlight non-compliance issues for immediate corrective action to be taken.
“i-SAFAS saves time because it is faster and easier to use than paper-based systems,” said Goodwin. “It is also more accurate because the system notes each entry and date/time stamps it. So the data is likely to be more accurate and helps prevent false data being entered.”
Other benefits include reduced storage space, because the data is archived on-line and is easily retrievable, and lower costs since it is a more cost-effective way to interrogate and analyse data, he added.
While other monitoring products are available, i-SAFAS is said to provide a more universal solution. “We don’t think there is anything currently on the market that has the level of detail and sophistication, or that can be easily adapted for specific applications.”
The system can be configured to address any food safety management environment including: single or multiple locations; multiple operators; and multiple shifts.
Cost of the system depends on the scale of the operation as each application is individually configured to suit the production environment.
