PACCOR’s revolutionary TIML (Thermoforming in-mold labeling) technology wins Packaging Oscar for its ability to meet the industry’s increasing demand for more sophisticated packaging decoration in combination with boosting output and efficiency. Aside from its operational and branding advantages, TIML offers a pioneering solution as the first-ever decorated, high barrier and retortable plastic packaging.
The Packaging Oscar rewards Research, Innovation, Efficiency and Inventiveness. 68 packaging products were submitted by manufacturers and brands this year, of which 19 were rewarded. The panel consisted of industry professionals and reporters who voted for entries via a process of secret ballot. Each winner received an exclusive Nicolas Destino designer trophy specially crafted from wood and cardboard.
In the plastic packaging category PACCOR, a member of the COVERIS Group, was nominated with 17 other companies and finally selected as the winner of this highly coveted title. PACCOR’s revolutionary TIML technology was recognized by the judges for its ability to meet the industry’s increasing demand for more sophisticated packaging decoration in combination with boosting output and efficiency.
In TIML the in-mold labeling process is integrated directly with the forming process. This cohesive approach offers advantages over traditional decorating methods like printing, shrink-sleeve labels and adhesive labels, all of which require secondary operations and application processes, have limited decoration area and are unsuitable for the sterilization process.
The new technology improves not only the quality of design but also enables complete outer and inner branding to be displayed up to the sealing rim. With TIML technology, various printing top-end features on multiple label options are easily achieved.
Aside from its operational and branding advantages, TIML offers a pioneering solution as the first-ever decorated, high barrier and retortable plastic packaging. The new solution is an attractive offering for baby food, ready meals stored in ambient conditions, as well as pet food, replacing glass and aluminium packaging. It is also suitable for other market segments like yellow fats, dairy and ice cream.
This breakthrough innovation has been achieved through a strategic collaboration between PACCOR Finland (Moreeni), first TIML production site, and PACCOR France (Auneau), supplying the PP/EVOH/PP barrier sheet to PACCOR Finland who produced the first high-quality decorated barrier tubs with TIML technology for Arla.
The implementation of the TIML technology was supported by the Center for Development & Innovation (CDI) located in Zell, Germany. It is a one-stop facility for new, innovative technologies and rigid packaging product development in the COVERIS Group, which offers a unique service to its customers.
