Veolia launches its biggest UK plastics recycling project with a £70M investment

Veolia has invested £70 million (US$93.8 million) in a plastics recycling project in Battlefield, UK, marking the company’s largest recycling investment in the country to date. The site will be home to the country’s first “tray-to-tray” closed-loop PET recycling plant, aimed at transforming used PET plastic trays and bottles into new food-grade packaging.Set to become operational by early 2026, the facility will process around 80,000 metric tons of mixed plastics annually, collected from households and businesses nationwide. By using recycled materials, the plant is expected to save up to 70% of the CO2 that would otherwise be associated with the use of virgin materials.
Ineos Styrolution creates bio-attributed polystyrene for food packaging in Japan

Ineos Styrolution has commercialized its Styrolution PS 158K BC100 polystyrene solution. It is entirely made from bio-attributed feedstock and can be used in food packaging.This year, food trays using this bio-based material are available on the shelves of the Japanese market through collaboration with a retail franchise.
Quadpack introduces PET injection moulding for lip gloss packaging

Global cosmetics packager Quadpack has invested in new equipment to manufacture lip gloss dip-in bottles at its facility in Kierspe, Germany. The injection-moulding equipment will allow the company to produce monomaterial packaging from PET and PCR.“There is a market gap for dip-in packs that are compatible with high-alkane content formulations, particularly in 6 ml full PET lip gloss solutions,” says Pierre-Antoine Henry, senior director of marketing, innovation, and strategic development at Quadpack.

The European Commission (EC) has proposed new restrictions on the use of traditional meat-related terms by plant-based food products, reigniting a contentious debate in the food industry over labeling, transparency, and innovation. The draft regulation — part of a revision of the Common Market Organization Regulation to amend Regulation No 1308/2013 — seeks to ban 29 “meat” specific terms.

Tetra Pak’s partnership with Fiat follows scepticism on cross-industry dipping

Fiat has become the first car manufacturer to incorporate recycled materials from used beverage cartons in a vehicle. The automobile manufacturer uses polyAI from Tetra Pak and other aseptic carton producers.  While Tetra Pak says the initiative promotes circularity, Paul Foulkes-Arellano, founder and director of Circuthon Consulting, refers to the collaboration as a “PR move.”

Fiber-based packaging hit hardest by new UK pEPR base fees

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published its packaging EPR (pEPR) base fees for 2025 and 2026. Out of all packaging materials, fiber-based composite faces the highest fee per metric ton at £461 (US$624), followed by plastic at £423 (US$573) per metric ton. In response, Talia Goldman, ESG director at Colpac, and co-chair and co-founder of the Alliance for Fibre-Based Packaging, tells Packaging Insights: “The newly released pEPR fees risk undermining UK sustainability goals by prioritizing cost over environmental benefit.”
