Rabobank’s RaboResearch finds that these changes will likely drive higher inflation, slower GDP growth and increased budget deficits, impacting industries like paper packaging. Yesterday, Trump was inaugurated as the 47th US president. Scientists in China develop self-recycling polymer
Scientists have developed a “novel polymer class” called polydithiourethanes (PDTUs) with covalent bonds that facilitate “self-recycling” — the reprocessing of polymer networks. The team based at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, found that PDTU’s bonds can undergo dissociation under mild conditions without the need for a catalyst, enabling efficient reprocessing.

Consumer Convenience Technologies (CCT) has announced a partnership with New York City-based family-style Italian restaurant Carmine’s to evolve its line of sauces through accessible packaging innovations and expanded retail availability.  The introduction of the Eeasy Lid enhances the accessibility of Carmine’s products. CCT’s patented lid reduces the torque required to open a jar by up to 50%, allowing consumers to vent a vacuum-sealed jar by pressing a button on the lid. 
TriMas Packaging launches foam pump for recyclable household and personal care products

TriMas Packaging, an operating group of TriMas, is releasing a recyclable foam pump that utilizes a polymeric spring instead of the conventional metallic spring. Patented under the Signolo line, the foam pump is suitable for beauty, personal care and household dispensers like hand soaps, body washes and hair care products.
Sweden DRS operator raises deposit fee to boost national recycling

Sweden’s DRS operator Returpack is increasing the deposit fee for consumers returning their empty PET bottles and aluminum cans. The goal of the deposit increase is to encourage consumers to return more empty products. The fees are raised from SEK1 (US$0.09) to SEK2 (US$0.18) on aluminum cans and small PET bottles and from SEK2 to SEK3 (US$0.27) on large PET bottles.

Fibre Packaging Europe (FPE), a coalition of seven trade associations from Europe’s forestry, pulp, paper, board and carton production and recycling industries, talks to us about what makes fiber-based materials “renewable, circular and sustainable”. The organization demands these products’ qualities to be recognized under a common EU law. “We need to make sure that fiber-based packaging is recognized as a renewable and recyclable alternative to fossil-based materials. Inconsistent implementation and interpretation of laws, along with varying standards among EU member states, create an uneven playing field for companies,” a FPE spokesperson tells Packaging Insights.
