Ball Packaging Europe has developed a new beverage can for the growing market of ready-to-drink coffee drinks: In February 2004, the Münsterland brands "Eis-cafe" and "Eis-choc", a chocolate/milk mix, were introduced in the German market in a 25-cl Slimline can. This is the first time that Münsterland-Marken-Vertrieb J. Lülf GmbH has marketed one of its products in a beverage can. The new coffee cans of 100% recyclable steel are deposit-free and distributed by convenience stores. The slim-line can was produced for Münsterland with a new type of base coat. Ball Packaging Europe is currently the sole supplier of this base coat which contains a high concentration of reflecting pigments to give the steel can a brighter and more brilliant appearance. The quantity and composition of the varnish and reflecting pigments can be varied to meet the specific requirements of various customer designs. With Eis-cafe and Eis-choc, Münsterland is targeting primarily younger, trend-conscious consumers. This target group has boosted sales of ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee beverages, which are quick and convenient to enjoy, to double digit growth rates. In Germany alone, the RTD coffee market grew by some 20 per cent in 2002. The 0.25-litre slim-line can has proved to be an attractive packaging solution which has contributed significantly to the market success of the RTD trend drinks. The slim-line can fits just as conveniently into the refrigerator as into a handbag.
