Benson Group and Dhruv Baker Spice Up Packaging
At the Benson Group’s Theatre of Food at Packaging Innovations, Masterchef winner Dhruv Baker will be tempting visitors with his signature blend of Asian and European cuisines, and Benson’s talented team of designers will also be on hand to impress you with their exceptional approach to the possibilities of carton board packaging.
On each day of the show, visitors to the Benson Group stand will be able to enjoy three live demonstrations of Dhruv’s delicious creations served in Benson’s range of carton tray packaging. They can browse carton packaging designs for Meal Solutions, Produce, Luxury Gifting, Beverage and Whiskeys and Spirits.
Inspired by the 2015 Paris fashion trends, Benson’s range includes state of the art designs and revolutionary print techniques developed by the company’s Conceptual Design and Technical Teams. Some of the print finishes on show will have been produced on the brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL106 B1 format perfecting press recently installed at the group’s Gateshead facility.
Throughout the show, the team will be guiding visitors through their astonishing range of packaging solutions and “hot off the press” print techniques which are making their debut to the industry at Packaging Innovations:
DesignerWare
DesignerWare is a true alternative to the standard CPET tray; it offers the ability to print both on the outside and inside of the pack, enabling huge potential in terms of pack copy, marketing text, photography and graphical areas. DesignerWare, from Benson’s parent company Graphic Packaging International, can offer inclusive “cooking solutions” - such as Susceptor for crisping or browning and MicroRite® to allow for even heating or shielding - which allows for oven-style cooked food with the convenience of using the microwave. Sleeved and lidded options are available. Due to the paper content DesignerWare offers superior environmental sustainability when compared to plastic or metal based trays.
“Molecule” Personal Care Carton
In this instance the printing techniques are hot off the press. Using specialist on-press techniques, textured relief varnish is applied followed by soft touch coating. The touch and feel is created as the relief varnish is capable of achieving heights of up to 30um resulting in a subtle embossed style effect. This is followed up with the silky smooth effect of the soft touch varnish to create a “WOW” moment when the consumer comes into contact with the pack. Certain variations of the “Molecule” design include Flexographic Silver ink which gives a far superior lustre than the lithographic equivalent.
“Depth” Whiskey Carton 3D Evolution
The innovation on this occasion is all in the print. Pearlescent varnish is applied to the carton in a standard offset lithographic process, then via a specialist plate it is compressed and distorted against the substrate, creating the 3D Evolution effect. The “Depth” carton is also reverse printed. Reverse print and 3D Evolution varnish application is possible to achieve in a single pass via the Benson Verso® service. Benson Verso® is available on the recently installed Heidelberg Speedmaster XL106 perfecting press which is capable of printing 2 colours plus coating on the reverse before flipping the material and printing 6 colours plus 2 coatings on the surface of the board.
FruitPack Carry Pack
FruitPack manages to achieve all and more than its corrugate competitors. Using a mono-material structure FruitPack is able to offer a premium image due to its superior printing surface. Strengthened corners allow for stacking and protection of the product enclosed. An opening feature allows easy decanting once in the consumer’s home or, if preferred, enables direct table presentation. FruitPack introduces an unusual material substrate to the produce aisle which up until now has been dominated by plastic bags, nets and punnets
