Drink the rainbow: Evian reveals Virgil Abloh limited-edition bottles
28 Feb 2019 --- Danone water brand Evian and designer Virgil Abloh have revealed the first limited-edition bottles from their creative partnership: the “One drop can make a Rainbow” range. The project marks the first for Abloh in his new role as Evian’s Creative Advisor for Sustainable Innovation Design. The range includes a refillable glass water bottles and a limited edition 75cl bottle.
Evian will work towards its 2025 commitment of becoming a 100 percent circular brand through pioneering partnerships and collaborations, redesigning packaging, accelerating recycling initiatives and recovering plastic waste from nature, notes the company.
Virgil’s designs for Evian are, reportedly, inspired by one of nature’s “most beautiful but simple phenomenon,” the rainbow. Speaking about this concept, Virgil commented: “The notion that one drop of water can create a rainbow served as the inspiration and metaphor to drive my first project as Evian’s Creative Advisor for Sustainable Innovation Design. As light refracts through that droplet, it reveals its full polychromatic potential. We don’t see just water, we see infinite possibilities and inspiration for anyone. Everyone.”
The range features a refillable Soma glass water bottle, designed as a “hydration accessory” for a trendy and conscious generation always on the go. The shatter-resistant glass bottle has an easy grip protective silicone sleeve, leak-proof natural bamboo cap and is emblazoned with Virgil Abloh’s mantra in an array of eye-catching colors.
A collectible, limited-edition 75cl bottle has also been released. The bottle is adorned with water drops in a range of colors, continuing the “One Drop can make a Rainbow” concept. The exclusive design will be available in limited quantities at select retail locations listed on the Evian website.
We are beyond thrilled with the first collaboration with Virgil Abloh, who embodies our vision for next-generation sustainable design and audience possibilities. The ‘One Drop can make a Rainbow’ concept captures the evian spirit and the ‘Live young’ mindset and we cannot wait to continue exploring and co-building innovation propositions together throughout the year across the full evian range as we work steadfastly towards our circularity commitment,” says Patricia Oliva, Evian’s Global Brand VP.
In January 2018, Evian announced its commitment to make all of its plastic bottles from 100 percent recycled plastic (rPET) by 2025, a move that will see the natural mineral water brand adopt a “circular approach” to its plastic usage, where plastic is kept within the economy and out of nature.
Last month, Evian celebrated a key milestone in this ambition, with a 50 percent rPET 1.5L bottle now in circulation worldwide and an average of 30 percent rPET globally across the range at the end of 2018, marking a positive step towards 100 percent.
