Innovative New Consumer Bags Provide Longer-Life Produce
Unlike ordinary plastic bags, PEAKfresh Produce Bags 'breathe' so that the damaging gases that can sometimes be produced by fresh produce are removed to prolong product life and freshness.
19/02/08 bpi.household, part of the British Polythene Industries Plc, is launching a pioneering polythene packaging product for consumers’ fruit and vegetables called PEAKfresh. It is designed to prolong the life and freshness of many fruit and vegetables once the consumer has brought them home and, in turn, to reduce food waste.
Available from a number of leading retailers PEAKfresh produce bags have been developed in direct response to the growing number of consumers regularly throwing away fruit and vegetables as they spoil before they have time to eat them.
Most fruit and vegetables release ethylene gas after harvest and exposure to this gas accelerates aging and ultimate deterioration. Unlike ordinary plastic bags, PEAKfresh Produce Bags 'breathe' so that the damaging gases that can sometimes be produced by fresh produce are removed to prolong product life and freshness. Additionally, PEAKfresh bags employ anti-fogging technology that minimises the formation of large moisture droplets in order to inhibit bacterial growth which also helps to extend product life. BPI already produces a range of bespoke ethylene scavenging bags which extend the life of fresh produce from farm or orchard to supermarket. To complement this range of existing products PEAKfresh bags are specifically aimed at those consumers who buy loose fruit and vegetables.
