Allied Glass has been proud to partner The Glasgow Distillery Company from its very outset when in 2014 they launched the unique Makar Gin, a sophisticated gin inspired by the number 7, Makar is pot distilled 7 times, is infused with 7 botanicals that complement the juniper that lies at the heart of the unique heptagonal bottle. Since then, the distillery has gone from strength to strength and whilst still busy with the original Makar, its’ talented team have also been working on some additional variants, recently launching three new distinctive gins Makar Old Tom and two cask aged spirits – Mulberry Cask Aged and Oak Cask Aged all packaged in the same exquisite extra white flint glass bottle.
Old Tom Gin has its origins in the 18th Century when crude distilling methods were the norm and vast quantities of sweetening agents were used to mask the otherwise harsh taste of the gin that was produced. While Old Tom as a gin only began as a more defined idea some hundred years later, the two notions that carry through to this day are the botanical intensity and sweetness that were continued from the early days. The aged Makar Gins were created during the experimentation process, the team being so pleased with the results from both the mulberry and oak casks that they decided to go with both.
No alterations were made to the original Makar spirit recipe before the ageing, so the biggest challenge was getting the timing right as some botanicals pare very well with a strong wood and others not so well. All four of the gins are triumphant examples of what the spirit has to offer and with their unique packaging they are becoming a force to be reckoned with within this highly competitive category.
