US-based Intelleflex has developed a new technology to track food as it is stored and transported, an innovation which could reduce food waste and improve food safety.
US-based Intelleflex has developed a new technology to track food as it is stored and transported, an innovation which could reduce food waste and improve food safety.
The new system uses cellular RFID tags with embedded global positioning devices (GPS), which can be placed on cases of tomatoes or vegetables which are being transported. The RFID tags record the location of the case, the temperature and time data. This data is sent to a cloud-based network and the producers can access the data via the cloud.
This technology can enable companies to easily manage produce and to better evaluate the shelf-life of food.
The reusable tag is economical, costing about $1 per use or less for a pallet of fruit. The system does not require expensive software to run it. This makes the technology cost effective even for small producers.
According to the company, this technology can transform the food system, allowing farmers to easily and cost effectively track food. It can enable small and midsized producers to meet the food safety requirements required by their distributors.
