Jokey partners with Spanish reusable packaging start-up Bumerang
09 May 2023 --- Jokey Group has joined a partnership with the Spanish start-up Bumerang to advance the development of reusable packaging. Bumerang, based in Barcelona, is specialized in reusable packaging solutions for the to-go sector and gastronomic delivery services.
Jokey says it supplies recyclable, reusable packaging to help generate a circular economy. The two companies together want to actively contribute to promoting the circular economy. Jokey see’s the partnership as part of its course for environmental sustainability to be as circular as possible by 2030.
“Working with a young and successful start-up like Bumerang fits both the fields of action of the Jokey Eco Concept and our overall [environmental] sustainability strategy,” says Ramona Lob, head of the Reusable Packaging Business Unit of the Jokey Group.
“With this step, Jokey joins a project that is considered one of the most promising in the reusable sector on the Spanish and Portuguese markets and can look forward to a steadily growing number of users.”
Reusable food packaging
Bumerang’s partners include canteen operators, cafes and restaurants. Bumerang says it uses resource-saving, stable, stackable and space-saving materials. This contributes to further reducing the ecological footprint – during production and use.
Jokey and Bumerang have partnered to explore reusable packaging to reduce single-use plastic waste. The start-up also claims it has developed a solution integrating technology, psychology and systems thinking to achieve circular economy goals. Its platform offers the “first” reusable packaging solution for Spain’s takeaway and delivery industry, eliminating the need for single-use plastic in these sectors.
“We are pleased to have a partner at our side with Jokey who can provide us with support with many years of experience and expertise in plastic injection molding,” explains Oriol Segarra Pol, founder and CEO of Bumerang.
“Jokey’s vision and special commitment to the reuse sector are ideal conditions for working with us. We both want to actively contribute to building a functioning circular economy in Europe.”
Continued collaborations
Jokey produces 15 plants in 12 countries and supplies customers in around 80 countries. It also has a toolmaking company and a business division for technical plastic parts and bathroom furniture.
The partnership marks an important milestone for Bumerang, explains Segarra Pol, because it secures the growth of the start-up and helps to expand the reach of its reusable packaging system.
From this, Bumerang says it will be able to fulfill its mission of getting rid of disposable packaging in the to-go sector from the markets more quickly.
Along with the Bumerang collaboration, Jokey has been working with other companies in the takeaway segment. The company plans to establish its own reuse segment with its own subsidiary brand. It will soon be launched on the market under the name KeepIn.
In addition to Jokey, Swedish company Duni also holds shares in Bumerang and works to manufacture and distribute environmentally sustainable disposable takeaway packaging as well as tableware and tableware for the gastronomic and food industries.
