le Freak Takes Chic Approach to Northern Rhone Winemaking Tradition
French wine crafted using the historic method of adding a splash of aromatic white Viognier to a bold red Syrah just became affordable thanks to the introduction of le Freak Shiraz/Viognier by Click Wine Group. le Freak is fifteen percent Viognier co-fermented with Shiraz resulting in a complex, soft, juicy wine. Most co-fermented wines from the Northern Rhone, which use similar techniques, retail for significantly more than le Freak's suggested retail price of $14.99.
Most co-fermented wines from the Northern Rhone, which use similar techniques, retail for significantly more than le Freak's suggested retail price of $14.99. le Freak is produced in partnership with Guy Anderson and winemaker Thierry Boudinaud, the creators of the French wine sensation FAT bastard. While le Freak's quality and style embrace French tradition, the wine's packaging does the opposite, making it easy for consumers to know what's inside the bottle. The label is simple and memorable. It bears a fun, quirky caricature of a face. The more modern "Shiraz," a varietal consumers have come to love thanks to Australia's booming success, is used in place of Syrah. "The wine industry is often intimidating with its stuffy formalities, big price tags and hard to read labels. We are changing this by making wine fun for consumers without sacrificing quality," said Peter Click, founder and CEO, Click Wine Group. "le Freak is a wonderful example of a wine that carries on a great old world tradition without the intimidation of price or packaging." Guy Anderson and French winemaker Thierry Boudinaud gave le Freak its name to reflect the unusual notion of mixing white with red grapes to make a unique and individualistic style of wine. The inaugural 2003 vintage is produced from 20-year-old vines located between Narbonne and Carcassonne. The 2003 vintage was an excellent vintage with very dry and hot conditions throughout the season. As a result, le Freak displays wildly attractive aromas and vibrant, bright fruit characters along with extraordinary complexity and finesse. le Freak is available nationwide.
