Masterbatch ups shelf life
DOUGLAS Baker Plastics, of Wolverhampton, claims that a new 'biostatic' masterbatch it has launched can increase the shelf life of fresh foods by several days. BakerBio inhibits the growth of microbial organism and fungi, says Douglas Baker, and in addition provides "considerable" UVA and UVB absorption. The masterbatch can be used in thermoplastic materials almost across the board, in injection moulding, extrusion and blown film application.

The additive contained in BakerBio is claimed to be particularly effective against organisms such as N.Crassa and A.Oryzae. BakerBio is said to meet with FDA requirements.
