Mondi expands digital printing range with white ink for corrugated packs
Mondi has introduced white ink to its digital printing range for corrugated packaging. The move reflects the growing demand for white digital printing on brown packaging, enabling designs that strengthen brand recognition while supporting environmental sustainability.
A white underprint ensures logos, motifs, and colors achieve the same kind of contrast on brown corrugated board as they would on white, enhancing visibility and recognition at the point of sale.
In addition, halftone printing is available, allowing “smooth gradients, differentiated shading, and chamfers that create three-dimensional image effects.”
“High-performance digital printing is one of the most flexible and sustainable printing processes available today. It combines high production speeds with high-quality, multicolour print images — on white and brown outer layers as well as on open flutes,” says Mondi.
Resource-efficient solution
All inks used in the process are water-based and certified by Swiss Quality Testing Services for safe application on primary packaging. Mondi’s data-to-print technology eliminates the need for printing plates or clichés, reducing set-up times and facilitating new designs to be introduced quickly and adapted at short notice, according to the company.
“Digital printing — now including the white option — offers advantages beyond those of flexographic or offset printing. A key benefit is the ability to print sequential barcodes, European Article Number codes, and QR codes directly onto the packaging. This eliminates the need for separate labels, saving costs, time, and resources, while also reducing potential scanning errors,” shares Mondi.
Medium and large quantities of the same design can be printed with variations in a single run. Optimized quantity splitting ensures the required number of prints is produced, lowering storage costs. The company’s digital printing is developed for multiple sectors, including e-commerce, F&B, and other fast-moving consumer goods.
This summer, Mondi collaborated with Komsa, a distributor for digital infrastructure in Germany, to print consecutive barcodes onto corrugated board packaging, without the need for additional labels or manual labeling.
