Nokia transitions to 100% recyclable packaging for Fixed Networks Lightspan portfolio
21 Nov 2023 --- Nokia is moving to 100% recyclable packaging for its Lightspan portfolio of broadband access nodes by the end of 2023. The protective plastic covers have been replaced with a biodegradable alternative, and the buffer material, safeguarding products from damage, is made from fully recyclable cardboard components certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The packaging is also designed for reuse in return shipments.
The new packaging prioritizes environmental conservation by eliminating non-biodegradable foam, plastic, bleaching, toxic materials and chemical treatments. The packaging design with a 60% reduction in size and a 44% reduction in weight, is said to lead to a decrease in CO2 emissions from transportation of up to 60%.
This move also supports Deutsche Telekom’s circularity goals for its supply chain. Nokia used the “eco-friendly” packaging to deliver a new generation of gigabit-speed G.fast access nodes to the service provider.
“Deutsche Telekom has set ambitious circularity goals for 2030. We focus on the entire lifecycle of our products and everything we buy from our technology suppliers,” says Arash Ashouriha, senior vice president of Group Technology Innovation at Deutsche Telekom.
“We have already taken out all single-use plastics in packing our own ‘T’-branded devices. Collaborating with our technology suppliers like Nokia on innovative ways of sustainable packaging is an essential next step.”
Furthermore, Geert Heyninck, head of Broadband Networks for Fixed at Nokia, emphasizes the positive impact of eco-friendly packaging on the company’s climate and environmental goals, stating: “By using 100% recyclable materials, we help to reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy. The packaging is also more compact, allowing more efficient transport and further reduces CO2 emissions by up to 60%.”
As part of its Nokia Networks Sustainable Packaging System strategy, the company aims to utilize organic, biodegradable materials, reducing transport costs and waste disposal. Nokia’s commitment extends to Science Based Targets, aiming to cut GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, aligning with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
