30 Jan 2013 --- Leading corrugated box maker, Rigid Containers Ltd, has recently opened a new design and technical centre at its Desborough, Northamptonshire headquarters. Heading up the new design and technical centre is Des Murphy, who has now assumed the role of Technical Director for the company. Murphy, with some 36 years experience in the corrugated industry, is well positioned to head the new department. “I am really excited by the opportunity of joining Rigid, especially at a time where they are investing in developing and enhancing customer services further,” he states. “With a dedicated studio and meeting area at our Desborough site, we can welcome customers and take full technical briefs from them. Once box designs have been completed and samples have been made, we can even present them to the customers on some ready-assembled store shelves so they can see what their box would look like in store.”
The self-contained design and technical centre operates from a 2,500 sq ft office suite. Dedicated meeting rooms and display areas have been created. In addition to the office suite, Rigid has also invested in a new Kongsberg XP24 sample maker. The machine has automatic registration for cutting printed samples, as well as featuring automatic tool levelling, which will improve the consistency of samples produced. It comes with a 160mm diameter crease wheel, which gives better definition of crease and prevents splitting. A 7.5KW vacuum capability gives better control of the board when cutting.
“The new Kongsberg table will increase our sample making capacity by 156 per cent,” explains Julian Freeman, Sales and Marketing Director. “We are delighted to have Des on the team and customers are already utilising the improved design services that we have to offer. Off the back of recent investments in new casemaking capacity as well as upgrading the corrugator at Desborough, we are seeing increased levels of support from our growing customer base.”
