Sabert serves up recyclable paper cutlery range for hot and cold foods
12 Apr 2022 --- Sabert is introducing a new range of recyclable paper cutlery made from FSC-certified paper. Demand for plastic-free cutlery has increased since the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive took effect on July 3, 2021.
“This new recyclable paper cutlery range is a remarkable innovation on the market, as it combines [environmental] sustainability, excellent recyclability and outstanding performance,” says Gisèle Nonnweiler, Sabert Europe’s marketing and innovation manager.
“The challenge was to develop [environmentally] sustainable cutlery made from paper, which is strong, robust, and performs well with stiffness and cut quality when used with hot or cold foods.”
The global food packaging manufacturer indicates there are many non-plastic alternatives on the market but finding an alternative that combines rigidity, good cut quality and a pleasant mouth sensation without adversely affecting food taste can be a challenge.
“We invested heavily in R&D to develop this new paper cutlery range, which delivers high performance in terms of rigidity, cut quality and resistance. The resulting innovation – owned and patented by Sabert – is so effective that our new paper cutlery’s performance is very close to plastic cutlery,” adds Nonnweiler.
The new range includes a 17 cm knife, fork and spoon, plus a 13 cm spoon.
Sustainably sourced paper
The recyclable paper cutlery range is made from paper produced from sustainable forestry and has full FCS chain of custody accreditations. The cutlery is fully recyclable in the paper waste stream and made from virgin cellulose.
With over 30 years in the packaging and foodservice industry, Sabert specializes in manufacturing and marketing innovative food packaging, high-quality disposable tableware and compostable food packaging and tableware.
The company has implemented several measures demonstrating its commitment to protecting the environment, including recycling 100% of its production waste, using green energy, investing in production tools that use less energy, and optimizing stacking to increase storage and transport space.
“Sabert has built on its commitment to quality by continuously investing in [environmentally] sustainable innovation to answer consumer demand for packaging solutions that are functional, safe, and recyclable,” continues Nonnweiler.
“Our new paper cutlery range delivers on our [environmental] sustainability criteria while also being stylish, practical and with that all-important great mouth-feel.”
