A powerful shelf presence is achieved by creating the right impact in a situation where hundreds of competing brands stand next to each other. For its premium Marqués de Cáceres brand, leading Spanish Rioja winemaker has created the right impact with a distinctive packaging solution, an elegant wine box that can accommodate one or up to six bottles. The boxes are made of Triplex Gris, part of the Stora Enso range of Beverage and Multipack packaging boards. Marqués de Cáceres is one of Rioja's most renowned brands and a worldwide ambassador of high-quality Spanish wines. The company Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres produces a range of 10 different Rioja wines (5 reds, 1 rosé and 4 whites) at its impressive winery in Cenicero, where more than 40,000 oak barrels are housed under one roof, together with a permanent stock of more than 10 million laid-down bottles. Easier to handle and greater visibility According to Joel Martínez, Export Sales Manager at Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres, half of the company's production is today sold in Spain and the rest is exported to more than 80 countries worldwide. When a winery sells its top-range Reservas through retail outlets, a powerful shelf presence is naturally assigned top priority. "Traditionally, wine bottles have been packed in wooden boxes but we are now using high-quality paperboard boxes increasingly because they enable us to print our brand colors and logos on them, at the same time as they are lighter and easier to handle, which facilitates transportation," says Joel Martínez. Leading retailers like the Carrefour Group also recognize the value inherent in the new paperboard boxes. "Making a distinctive brand statement on the wine shelf is a tough job, especially when you consider that today Carrefour carries hundreds of wines in its normal range. But suppliers are now making a real effort to position their brands and create maximum consumer awareness through new paperboard boxes," comments Vanessa de la Calle, Product Manager Wines, Carrefour Spain. Stronger brand message thanks to high-quality board "Brandy, spirits and liqueur producers have always favored stylish cartonboard boxes and now the wine sector is picking up on this trend," says Javier Elías, Managing Director of Digraf, converter for the Marqués de Cáceres boxes. Mika Järvenpää, Sales Manager at Stora Enso Barcelona shares this view. "Premium wine brands are now one of the fastest-developing businesses for our Beverage and Multipack packaging boards. And no wonder, a generous printing area and excellent full color quality make paperboard cartons a superb vehicle for communication and an enhanced shelf presence." Stora Enso's Beverage and Multipack products range includes SUB, SBS, WLC, FBB and CTMP boards. For premium wines, a paperboard box offers a unique combination of outstanding imaging quality, functionality, versatility and cost effectiveness. Excellent results are guaranteed for the most elaborate printing, converting and finishing processes: offset, flexo or digital printing, hot foil stamping or spot varnishing. The label paper on many Marqués de Cáceres bottles is also from Stora Enso and is printed by Argraf. Yet another important partner in the value chain is the paper merchant Artepapel, which represents Stora Enso label papers in the La Rioja wine district.
