€ 31,3 Million Gives Higher Operational Stability

18/08/06 The Board of Directors of the Holmen forest industry group has given Iggesund Paperboard the go-ahead for investments totalling € 31.3m (approx. GBP 21.4 m) for the complete rebuild of the lime kiln and a new tall oil digester at the pulp manufacturing facility of the Iggesunds Bruk board mill. The investments are primarily reinvestments designed to give more stable and reliable operations than can be achieved with the existing equipment. Start-up is estimated to November 2007.
“We have very high availability in both our pulp and board manufacturing,” explains Staffan Jonsson, mill manager at Iggesunds Bruk.
“This will help ensure the continuation of that availability in the future.”
The lime kiln is an important part of the chemical recovery system which forms the heart of the chemical pulp production process. In order to separate the pure cellulose fibres in the wood chips, the chips are cooked with chemicals. After the fibres have been separated out the chemicals can be recovered and reused.
“Chemically produced pulp of the highest quality is a prerequisite for the manufacture of our flagship product, Invercote,” Jonsson adds. “This new investment package also includes a rebuild that will allow us to cover more of the mill’s energy needs with the bio-fuel tall oil instead of using oil from fossil fuel.”
At the end of 2005 the Holmen board agreed to grant Iggesund Paperboard € 43.6 m for a rebuild of Iggesunds Bruk’s board machine 2, KM2. The rebuild is now in the advanced planning stages and will be implemented in September-October 2007.
“We are definitely a leader in the production of high-quality paperboard and we must continually improve our process and product quality to retain that position as our customers continuously demand more and more advanced products,” Jonsson concludes.
