A study by Amcor and French cheese producer Laïta has revealed that 70% of consumers prefer easy-to-open packaging for hard cheese products, highlighting the importance of convenience and recyclability.
Amcor and Laïta recently launched new packaging for Paysan Breton Emmental cheese blocks, Laïta’s flagship brand, using Amcor’s AmPrima PP film in the Easy Pack format with an adhesive tape for re-closability.
Laura Delapeyronnie, marketing manager for Dairy at Amcor, says: “Our collaboration with Laïta reflects our commitment to developing packaging solutions that balance sustainability with performance and consumer convenience. Our research findings provide strong reassurance that we are aligned with what matters most to consumers.”
Conducted in March 2026, the joint study surveyed over 500 French hard cheese consumers. It finds that convenience was the most influential packaging characteristic for in-store purchasing. The study also assessed other attributes, including visuals, design, sustainability claims, textures, and materials.
Validating sustainability claims
Innova Market Insights recently announced its Top Packaging Trends 2026, with “Substantiated Sustainability” taking top spot. This trend emphasizes the need for verified environmental claims, driven by stricter regulations, such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
The research reveals that, for 67% of surveyed consumers, a packaging’s sustainability claims influence purchasing decisions, reflecting growing consumer awareness of circular solutions.
Mathieu Boulc’h, packaging manager at Laïta, says: “This project, developed in close collaboration, illustrates our ability to address consumer expectations around sustainability and ease-of-use for tomorrow’s packaging, without trade-offs.”
The AmPrima PP replaces Laïta’s former hard-to-recycle multimaterial structure. It is recyclable and remains compatible with Laïta’s existing packaging equipment.
Carbon footprint reduction
The new AmPrima PP film is said to deliver a 63% reduction in carbon footprint and a 6% reduction in plastic weight compared to the previous solution, lowering EPR fees.
“This assessment is based on a cradle-to-grave comparison of standard Easy Pack versus AmPrima PP Easy Pack Film, assuming 100% incineration of the baseline pack and 100% recycling of the new pack,” says the global flexible packaging provider.
The carbon footprint reduction is calculated using Amcor’s ASSET lifecycle assessment model, validated by Carbon Trust.
Recently, Amcor partnered with Metsä Group and G. Mondini, a provider of food packaging equipment, enabling a fully integrated fiber-based tray system that adopts a lightweight barrier liner and top web, designed for protein and chilled ready meal applications.
It also provided French hair care specialist Luxéol with a tailored version of its Prima jar for Luxéol’s curl mask.
