26/10/07 A new case ready package from Sealed Air’s Cryovac Food Solutions offers modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) applications the benefit of film-to-meat contact without meat discoloration.

Cryovac Mirabella packaging is unique, offering benefits such as headspace reduction and enhanced visibility of the product, while enhancing the shelf life of fresh red meat and poultry by using a modified atmosphere package.

The Cryovac Mirabella package consists of two co-extruded shrink films – a permeable sealant film plus a high-barrier outside film. The double film is combined with Cryovac rigid polypropylene or Barrier Foam trays to make a hermetically sealed package that eliminates leaking packages.

Prior to sealing on a modified tray/lid system, the double film is separated on the roll to allow modified atmosphere gas mix to travel between the spaces of the two films. This space allows the permeable film to touch the meat without the meat discoloring as it does when using only a barrier film. The processor is able to use a high oxygen/carbon dioxide atmosphere to enhance the quality life of the meat.

Everyone from meat processors to retailers can experience the added value of Mirabella packaging. For processors, the use of Mirabella film allows the use of shallower trays without the worry of the product touching the barrier film. This leads to optimal space utilization, reduced transport costs and reduced MAP gas consumption.

Meanwhile, retailers will have less headspace in the package which creates optimized retail shelf utilization. Mirabella film features superior shrink properties, providing a superb wrinkle-free, flat finish for enhanced presentation on retail shelves. The combination of top-class, anti-fog performance, film clarity and lower headspace results in superior optics, so the meat is showcased to its best advantage. Using Mirabella film also ensures an optimal shelf-life thanks to the film’s high oxygen barrier properties.

Coupled with the use of lower profile trays and the Mirabella film, the amount of packaging material used and waste generated is reduced.
