Eviosys survey reveals consumer concerns over wasteful gifting practices during holiday season
20 Dec 2023 --- According to a Europe-wide survey commissioned by metal packaging producer Eviosys, 87% of consumers believe the gifting season contributes to wasteful behavior. This insight reflects a growing awareness of environmental concerns tied to gift-related packaging practices.
The survey, conducted among 2,000 consumers in the UK, France, Germany and Spain, delves into evolving consumer sentiments, particularly in the context of economic uncertainties prevalent during the festive season.
Against a backdrop of economic unease, with more than half of Europeans (56%) expressing the cost of living as their primary concern, the survey sheds light on a broader shift in consumer priorities. Notably, the study captures a frustration among 59% of respondents regarding the prevalent use of plastic in supermarkets, indicating a demand for sustainable alternatives.
Consumer willingness to embrace sustainable packaging emerges as a key theme, with 57% expressing a readiness to pay more for products packaged in materials other than plastic.
Laetitia Durafour, marketing director at Eviosys, contextualizes these findings within the company’s mission to address consumer expectations by championing sustainable, recyclable metal packaging solutions.
“We’re not merely witnessing a shift in consumer preferences but actively shaping a future where responsible choices define our packaging landscape, reflecting the growing commitment toward a more eco-conscious society.”Eviosys addresses consumer expectations by championing sustainable, recyclable metal packaging solutions.
Reusing gift tins
The survey underscores a preference for metal packaging, with 63% of respondents perceiving it as more sustainable than plastic.
Further emphasizing this trend, 82% of participants indicate a higher likelihood of purchasing a product packaged in metal due to its recyclable nature. “This continued mindset shift towards metal means the industry has an opportunity to capitalize and make a positive change to the market,” states Eviosys.
The survey underscores consumers’ influence on purchasing decisions, revealing that 48% prioritize the ability to reuse or refill a product over considerations of luxury or design. Moreover, 94% of respondents report actively reusing or repurposing metal gift tins, with popular choices including storing decorations (51%), food storage (47%), jewelry storage (38%) and as a base for DIY projects (26%).
In the context of mounting environmental concerns, 66% of respondents feel that companies are not doing enough to tackle plastic pollution, while 61% view companies adopting metal packaging as taking a crucial step toward reducing environmental footprints.
The findings evidently signal a call for heightened corporate responsibility and a positive shift in consumer perceptions toward companies embracing eco-friendly alternatives.
