FachPack 2021: ATS and Bandall present new banding machines across plastic and paper
30 Sep 2021 ---Banding technologies continue to roll out at Fachpack 2021 as the show reaches its final day in Nuremberg, Germany. ATS is presenting its new machine for banding different sizes on one machine. Meanwhile, Bandall is showcasing its new Eco band, which introduces less PE on paper bands.
“We want to offer a good machine that works safely. We are dealing with banding materials – a hole in one – and we try to offer a good service. Our technicians are on the market ready to help the customer,” Michael Kallweit, ATS area sales manager, tells PackagingInsights.
“We are presenting our ‘Branding by Banding’ concepts, mainly for food materials. We offer plastic films and of course a lot of paper films,” Jan Musch, senior account manager, also tells PackagingInsights over at the Bandall stand.
Notably, bandings are becoming increasingly popular as an eco-friendly replacement for shrink films and labels. These solutions can be printed in advance for a maximum promotional effect while reducing plastic packaging material.
When to use what
Musch highlights his company’s material recommendation for customers depends on what application they are targeting.
“For example, in the meat and fish industry, a plastic band will be better due to the moisture inside the production process or when the product reaches retailer shelves. The [plastic] band will look nicer because paper can attract moisture and degrade a little bit,” he explains.
“But, for example, a paper band is a very good solution for textile or woven materials,” he adds.
ATS launched a new banding machine using cold-welded ultrasonic technology.ATS’s new banding machine is called US-2000 MD. Weighing just 115 kg, it allows for banding size changes between 30 and 50 mm on one machine.
“We needed to present something new to the market. Our customers requested this new machine,” Kallweit explains. Generally, the company targets the food, pharma and printing industries, using all recyclable materials.
Adhesive-free sealing
While both ATS and Bandall differ in their sealing techniques, both companies opt out of using adhesives.
ATS uses a cold sealing technique – “unique in the market” – made by ultrasonic technology. This technique generates no heat and does not require glue. The company also highlights the products bound with wide bands are torsionally strong and protect product edges. At the same time, the product has greater stability.
Bandall’s bands made from paper and films are heat sealable. “It is easy to understand how to use and maintain the system,” Musch details. He also highlights how heat sealing technology is less expensive than ultrasonic.
Banding together
Earlier this month, PackagingInsights visited Bandall’s stand at Empack in Den Bosch, the Netherlands, where the company explained how banding can help F&B companies deliver significant environmental sustainability improvements.
Ahead of the show, we also spoke with Mosca about the premiere of its high-performance pallet strapping machine using banding technology.
