Herma unveils tamper-proof checkerboard material
Key takeaways
- Herma launches HermaVoid checkerboard, a tamper-evident self-adhesive for rough cardboard packaging.
- Silver-metallized PET material reveals a visible pattern when labels are removed or interfered with.
- Solution supports growing global demand for cost-effective security labels across supply chains.

Herma has launched its tamper-proof, self-adhesive HermaVoid checkerboard material for cardboard packaging used in rough transport conditions, amid growing demand for security labels.
The solution is a silver-metallized PET self-adhesive material with a concealed, tamper-proof pattern on the reverse side. If a label has been tampered with, the characteristic checkerboard pattern remains visible on the surface, indicating an attempted removal.
Hendrik Kehl, product manager at Herma, says: “It offers label printers the opportunity to participate in an extremely attractive, steadily growing market. And label users get an efficient and cost-effective solution for protecting products, brands, and property along supply chains.”
The HermaVoid checkerboard is equipped with the 63B adhesive, an “ideal” material for critical substrates such as rough cardboard. In addition, the adhesive is water-resistant and said to be suitable for cool and damp surfaces.

Design opportunities
According to Herma, the design offers “many possibilities” as it can be processed using conventional printing methods such as UV flexographic printing, letterpress printing, or screen printing.
Moreover, the solution is customizable. The checkerboard pattern can be adapted to brand or application-specific requirements, for example, with customized lettering or a logo.
Demand for security labels
Herma highlights that demand for security labels is growing “robustly,” with the market expected to grow by seven percent annually worldwide over the next few years.
Recently, the US Food & Drug Administration expanded its cosmetic regulations, emphasizing temperature-resistant packaging for consumer safety. Meanwhile, other solutions for product security came on the market, such as fingerprint-locked reusable water bottles in China, which are dominating sales charts on major e-commerce platforms.
