Pliant Announces New Multi-Layer Barrier Film with Nylon Skin Layers
Although cast co-extrusions with nylon skins already exist in the marketplace, the blown Stratum NS film has higher inherent orientation which will provide better stiffness and toughness gauge for gauge over cast multi-layer products.”
03/11/06 Pliant, a global leader in value added films and packaging solutions, is pleased to announce the launch of its Stratum NS film. The product is a new innovation from Pliant which incorporates nylon skin layers to a multi-layer (typically 5 or more layers) blown film structure.
Dean Baker, Director of Technology for Engineered Films, provides the following insight into the new product: “It is a one-pass blown film that is economically advantaged over traditional laminated nylon structures. Although cast co-extrusions with nylon skins already exist in the marketplace, the blown Stratum NS film has higher inherent orientation which will provide better stiffness and toughness gauge for gauge over cast multi-layer products.”
Baker continues: “The challenge in doing this was that the normal result of a blown film with nylon skin layers is film deformation when it is re-heated during the forming process. Through the efforts of Pliant’s engineering team, we have developed a post-treatment that eliminates this phenomenon.”
“Our target applications are form-fill-seal packaging that require medium or high barrier properties and protection for high abuse and bulk products,” according to Mark Dawson, Vice President of Marketing for Food & Beverage. “Typical products would be meat snack or bulk cheese packages”.
“Stratum NS is another example of Pliant’s efforts to continue to innovate and develop high-integrity film products while striving towards overall waste-stream reduction”, adds Randy Scott, Pliant Team Leader for Marketing. “We are committed to the ideals of sustainable packaging”.
