Robopac implements Mondi’s kraft paper Advantage StretchWrap to remove machinery plastic
14 Sep 2023 --- Mondi has partnered with Robopac, a manufacturer of pallet-wrapping machinery, to offer a paper-wrapping solution for pallet storage and transportation called the Advantage StretchWrap.
The Advantage StretchWrap is made from 100% kraft paper. The paper protects palletized goods with its high strength, puncture resistance and tension absorption.
The two organizations collaborated to develop the solution, combining Mondi’s expertise in packaging and paper with Robopac’s knowledge about wrapping machines. Mondi states the paper is created with responsibly sourced, renewable materials, containing no plastic or coating, making it fully recyclable in existing European waste streams.
“Our biggest challenge was to adapt the paper material to the packaging operations while ensuring maximum stabilization of the customer’s products during transportation with minimum use of resources,” says Filiberto Felici, product manager at Robopac.
“Using our unique Cube Technology, we achieve maximum load stabilization and are very satisfied with the effectiveness of our machines’ performances in conjunction with Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap.”
Removing “unnecessary” plastic
Robopac’s semi-automated and fully automated machines can take Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap, allowing customers to replace “unnecessary” plastic. Plastic is currently the industry standard for pallet wrapping.
Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap is used on Robopac’s new paper-wrapping machine.A Mondi-commissioned independent LCA demonstrated that Advantage StretchWrap performed better in several environmental impact categories, such as climate change, compared to plastic options.
The LCA found that Mondi’s wrap has 62% lower GHG emissions compared to virgin plastic stretch film and 49% lower GHG emissions compared to plastic stretch film made with 50% recycled content.
Bartosz Babicz, product manager StretchWrap, Flexible Packaging at Mondi, says: “Close collaboration with our partners is key to transition to [environmentally] sustainable packaging solutions. Therefore, working with Robopac is driving our progress toward a circular economy and provides our customers a combination of state-of-the-art machinery with quality wrapping paper.”
Adopting paper wrap
The semi-automatic machine can process a 25 kg reel of Advantage StretchWrap to secure up to 40 pallets with one reel every hour. Meanwhile, the fully automated wrapping machine can wrap up to 750 pallets with one reel, equating to up to 60 pallets per hour.
Mondi and Robopac introduced the solution at the 2023 Interpack trade show.
Previously, Mondi supplied its Advantage StretchWrap to Silbo to substitute its pallet wrapping made from plastic stretch film.
