Europe’s leading manufacturer of composite cans developed and produced the round wine barrel from recycled board material at its Hockenheim plant. Highest quality wine is added by privately owned wine producer F.W. Langguth Erben. Located on the banks of the Mosel river, the company operates one of the largest cellars in Europe. Langguth Erben presented the wine barrel for the first time at ProWein in Düsseldorf for its “Medinet” selection. In the past, German consumers have expressed misgivings about larger packages for wine. This skepticism stems primarily from the frequently utilized unattractive packaging in square bag-in-box cartons, which usually contain less expensive wines distributed by discounters. In other European countries these large containers are actually increasing retail sales of wine considerably. Featuring an attractive wood design, the new wine barrel by Weidenhammer now aims at making the purchase of wine in larger containers more palatable for German connoisseurs by indicating that the contents is indeed of higher quality. What’s more important: once opened, there is no rush to drink the entire barrel. Thanks to the utilization of the specialized valve and aluminum barrier bag, no oxygen can enter the barrel once it is tapped. This prevents the oxidation of the prized vintage. Thanks to this system, the wine remains fresh and ready for enjoyment for at least four weeks after opening. The new barrel delivers another benefit: the dreaded cork taste is a thing of the past. Privatkellerei F.W. Langguth Erben is the first wine producer to introduce the new 3-liter barrel to the German market. At ProWein in Dusseldorf the wine experts launched their popular French red wine brand Medinet in this novel presentation. Since Easter, the new F.W. Langguth Erben packaging has been available in retail and specialty stores under the name “Medinet 3-Liter Weinfass“ (Medinet 3-Liter Wine Barrel) next to the familiar one-liter amphora. The new 3-liter wine barrel utilizes the classic bag-in-box process, however, the system has been greatly enhanced to transform it into a “bag-in-drum”. An aluminum coated plastic bag with a press-in spigot is inserted into a composite drum. The wine is released through a tap covered with an original seal. Like conventional composite drums, the drum is made out of 90 percent recycled paper. However, the carrying handle attached to the plastic cover (PP) has been replaced by two stands. The carton cover and the body of the barrel are imprinted with a wood design, while the high-quality label has been printed in a multi-color offset process featuring high-gloss lacquer. Unlike standard bag-in-the-box packaging, this design does not require the bottler to use a separate carton erector for setting up the folding box blanks.
