Tomra Food launches AI optical sorting for nut and IQF packagers

Tomra Food has designed an AI-powered optical sorting machine targeting nut and Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) packaging companies. The Tomra 4C sorting machine, part of the company’s Chute portfolio, is pre-set and ready to integrate into any nut sorting line without complex setup or adjustments.

Kristof Franckx, product manager for the Chute portfolio at Tomra, describes the 4C as the company’s “most advanced” optical sorting machine yet.

“In the Tomra 4C, we’ve combined the latest generation of Pulsed LED sensors and AI to deliver a machine that is powerful and incredibly easy to use. And here is something I’m especially excited about: the Tomra 4C is the first bulk sorter to run the entire spectrum of AI in tandem.”

Franckx says that he has spent years working closely with nut and IQF processors, “listening to their challenges and understanding what really matters on the sorting line.”

Ensuring packaging efficiency

A key goal for the Tomra 4C is to save operators’ time and simplify their daily tasks.

“Whether switching between machines or cleaning, every detail has been engineered to streamline operations and reduce downtime,” he adds. 

According to Tomra, the machine stands out with its ability to achieve a false reject rate of less than 1%. Simultaneously, it can detect a range of defects and environmental foreign materials. 

Franckx says, “This level of precision means processors can maintain high product quality without sacrificing yield.”
