Mondi supplies Norwegian furniture company with paper-based mattress covers

Mondi has equipped Ekornes with its re/cycle CompressWrap, a paper-based protective packaging solution that secures high-end mattresses during transport.

The re/cycled CompressWrap incorporates Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 as the first layer. This ensures durability and vacuum sealing. The second packaging layer secures the mattress with an outer wrapper made from Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce.

Ola Forsberg, industry group manager of foaming papers at Mondi, says: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to working hand-in-hand with our customers to solve industry-specific challenges. By understanding Ekornes’ needs, we were able to deliver a packaging solution that not only meets their technical requirements but also contributes to a circular economy.”

The paper solution is set to replace Ekornes’ former plastic packaging in response to growing demand for recyclable solutions. According to Mondi, the new CompressWrap solution works on existing Ekornes machinery, making the switch convenient and cost-efficient.

Pål Aage Nordahl, managing director at Ekornes Beds, says: “This new partnership with Mondi means we can now wrap that promise in a solution that aligns with our commitment to sustainability. Together, we’ve created packaging that protects our high-end mattresses and reflects our values and those of our customers.”

The solution means that consumers can unwrap the mattress without a knife or scissors, which Mondi describes as a “safe unwrapping experience.”

Mondi will showcase the solution at FachPack in Nuremberg, Germany, September 23–25.

Recently, Mondi unveiled a new kraft paper designed for form-fill-and-seal packaging such as sharp-edged or heavy items, such as dry food, toys, spare parts, and building materials.
