A bit more information for consumers: In the EU from December 13, 2014, the so-called new food information regulation, (LMIV) will be applied. This regulation replaces the essential previously valid national regulations on food labeling. The goal is a uniform food labeling to ensure the health and interests of consumers are better protected. As part of the upcoming regulations Grünländer has changed its packaging declaration already.
Nutritional information, allergens and list of ingredients
The new Food Information Regulation makes, among other things, a change in the existing nutritional information that is necessary. So far, the indication of the nutritional values of a product was voluntary, with few exceptions. The so-called "Big Four" (calorific value and content of protein, carbohydrates and fat) or "Big Eight" (calorific value and content of protein, carbohydrate, sugars, fat, saturates, fiber and sodium) in this order may be specified. On a voluntary basis, manufacturers were able to supplement the information to other nutritional information such as starch or saturated fatty acids.
Under the new LMIV the so-called "Big Seven" are a must (calorific value and content of fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt) can be specified in this order. The lactose content may no longer be in the same table as the other nutritional values ("Big Seven") as before, but only in the immediate vicinity of this information. For consumers that are lactose content, this can be found quickly and easily on the label in the future, with Grünländer specifying transparent and clearly and directly under the nutrition table.
In order to better inform consumers and those with allergies and to protect them, the information must be particularly easy to find on the label of the food in the wake of the new LMIV ingredients that can cause allergies or other intolerances. Ingredients and processing aids, of which there is scientific evidence that they can cause allergies or intolerances must be listed in the ingredients and highlighted. For products from the house of Grünländer allergens are therefore made in the future identified by a visual emphasis in bold. In addition, Grünländer lists all the ingredients that are necessary for the production of cheese - such as milk, microbial rennet, cultures and salt - listed separately.
Proven Grünländer quality
With the new LMIV some changes are coming in force, the quality of Grünländer remains unchanged and still excellent: all products are guaranteed with controls for being without genetic engineering, no artificial additives, no preservatives and lactose-and gluten-free. Since Grünländer can be classed as lactose-free thanks to a lactose content of less than 0.1 g per 100 g, it may be enjoyed by cheese lovers with lactose intolerance. Grünländer cheese is available in eight varied varieties nationwide in the refrigerated section and at the cheese counter.
