Speaking at FachPack 2021, Torsten Fleck, head of sales for Central and Northern Europe containerboards at Mondi, presents ProVantage Smartwhite, an innovative product combining the quality features of a premium White Top Kraftliner with recyclability. Iris Perz, external communication manager for corrugated packaging at Mondi, also shares insights on e-commerce’s accelerated growth and meeting consumer demands.
Josh, report reporting from Ftpack 2021.
I'm here at the Mondi stand with Torsten Fleck, who is head of sales for Central Northern Europe Container Board.
So Torsten, Mondi's exhibiting his Pro vantage Smart White containable grade today at the show.
What are the key features of this solution and what, in what ways is it an improvement on conventional white top craft liners?
Smart light is a sustainable alternative to white top graft liners because we are using fresh bleached fiber pulp in the top sheet.
And in the bottom sheet we are using recycled brown fibers, so Smart White is the perfect choice for all applications which are not requiring 100% virgin.
Fibers and you can use it in almost all applications like the food and beverage industry as as packaging, retail, retail packages, and not to forget e-commerce.
OK, and the solution meets the most demanding printing requirements, which is obviously crucial to brand appeal.
Technically speaking, how does a container achieve this level of printability?
Yes, we are having on the top sheet bleached graft pipe with a very high brightness as as very low roughness, and we produce it in the mill in Romber where we have in-house very high printing expertise for many, many years.
OK, thank you.
Thank you.
I'm now joined by Iris Perez, who is external communication manager at Mondi for corrugated packaging.
Welcome Iris.
So e-commerce is obviously accelerated as a result of COVID-19, including for home delivery.
Do you expect e-commerce to continue expanding post pandemic?
What we know from our last conducted survey in 2020, nearly 90%, actually 86%.
Of people we asked in Central Eastern Europe told us they will continue to buy online.
We also see a new target group, actually so-called silver surfers, using online shopping actually for the first time due to the pandemic.
We will see how this target group or these stakeholders will continue.
We are right now conducting this year's study.
We'll also have a look at the silver surface this year.
OK.
And what are the main sources of customer and consumer requirements for e-commerce packaging as the market becomes increasingly competitive?
Packaging for our customers have to fulfill three major criteria.
One is protection, the protection of the goods.
It has to be efficient, easy, and also sustainable.
And the sustainable trend also comes from the consumer.
Maybe you remember yourself when you're buying something online during the pandemic, you're not happy if there is filling material, plastic, for example, or even if it's paper.
Less waste is, is an intrinsic wish of the consumers now, and that's why we're working together with our customers on creating the perfect e-commerce packaging for their needs.
OK, that's brilliant, thanks for your time.
