“Good for the planet and good for business”: AUSPACK conference to focus on sustainable innovation
26 Feb 2019 --- The AUSPACK Business and Industry Conference will place sustainability as a key focus in light of the Australian 2025 National Packaging Waste Target. Dr. Michael Okoroafor, Vice President of Global Sustainability and Packaging Innovation at McCormick, US, will give the conference’s opening keynote presentation – an industry outlook on key insights driving the future of packaging for FMCG companies. The conference will take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Tuesday 26 March to Wednesday 27 March 2019.
“It has been said that the 2025 National Packaging Waste Target is giving the industry one of the biggest challenges we’ve seen in modern times. However, it’s important to recognize that in every challenge there is also an opportunity, so this panel session will focus on the potential in front of the packaging and processing industry to be a leader in sustainability,” notes AUSPACK in a statement.
The 2025 National Packaging Waste Target was announced by the Australian Government last year. The key targets included? that 100 percent of Australia's packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 or earlier and that 70 percent of the country's plastic packaging will be recyclable or compostable by 2025.
Companies and organizations supporting the pledge include Aldi, ALGA, Amcor, Boomerang Alliance, Chep, Close the Loop, Coca-Cola Amatil, Detmold, Goodman Fielder, Nestlé, Orora, Suez, Tetra Pak, Unilever, Veolia and Woolworths.
The panel will look at the role packaging has in minimizing food waste, key innovations as the industry moves away from single-use packaging and the potential of the circular food economy.
Dr. Okoroafor, who was inducted into the Packaging and Processing Hall of Fame at last year’s Pack Expo International, will share his insights on using transformational packaging innovation and a re-aligned supply chain to drive FMCG industry growth.
Following Dr. Okoroafor will be a panel of CEOs from key Australian sustainability organizations. They will converse over how business can work through the opportunities surfacing from the 2025 National Packaging Waste Target.
