Alcoa Consumer Products has developed the Fresh-Lock slider, a zip system with a slider that can be incorporated into existing packaging lines, without incurring high costs. According to Robert-Jan Teunissen of Alcoa this concerns a zip system with a low learning curve. Alcoa has conducted a market study among zipper users in the food and the non-food industry. The study formed the basis for the development of the Fresh-Lock slider. According to Teunissen, packagers view zip closures as a complex, expensive addition to flexible packaging. The Fresh-Lock slider was developed by Alcoa in cooperation with Bossar and Mespack. The largest part—some 70%--of the zippers of Alcoa is used for horizontal fill, form and seal machines. The rest of the production is for the VFS machine market. The latter market is considered by Teunissen to be the real growth market. In addition, Alcoa is becoming more and more interested in the deep draw market.
