Beiersdorf’s Nivea rolls out refillable hand soap dispenser in UK Tesco supermarkets
17 Nov 2021 --- Beiersdorf’s Nivea brand has launched a reusable hand soap dispenser made entirely from recycled and recyclable PET. The EcoRefill Hand Soap solution has rolled out in 50 UK Tesco stores and supports Nivea’s self-set goal to use only refillable, reusable or recyclable plastic packaging by 2025.
The personal care brand indicates it is keen to ensure environmental and hygiene efficacy through its dispense pump and related cleanser tablets. Moreover, EcoRefill Hand Soap typically lasts 25% longer compared to standard Nivea liquid hand soap.
According to Innova Market Insights, the majority of global consumers (52%) believe reusable packaging is the most environmentally sustainable model, followed by recyclable (50%) and recycled (39%), biodegradable (31%) and compostable (24%).
“Choosing sustainable skincare products is becoming more important every single day, as consumers are increasingly opting for brands that are kind to both their skin and the planet,” Nivea supports.
Innova Market Insights recently identified “Shared Planet” as its leading consumer trend for 2022, pinpointing how consumers now rank planetary health as their number one concern, overtaking personal health.

Using the product
EcoRefill Hand Soap consists of a dispense pump and cleanser tablets. First, lukewarm water is filled into the bottle, then the refill tablet is added, and the bottle is closed with the pump. Users are then invited to shake for 30 seconds. “Once finished, you can refill the bottle Nivea EcoRefill tablets again and again,” the brand says.
While consumers can use the hand soap five minutes after adding the tablet, it takes up to five hours to dissolve completely.
“Gentle, caring, mild and moisturizing, Nivea EcoRefill Hand Soap boasts a 99% biodegradable formula, free from alcohol and mineral oil. As well as its easy application, the mild formula is pH-skin friendly, dermatologically approved, and suitable for all skin types,” highlights Nivea.
The hand soap is available in different fragrances, including lemongrass, cotton flower, and hibiscus and honeysuckle.
2025 targets
Nivea plans to realize its environmental sustainability agenda by 2025. The brand’s targets include the 50% reduction of fossil-based virgin plastic used in packaging, 30% of plastic packaging consisting of recycled material, and guaranteeing plastic packaging is refillable, reusable or recyclable.
In similar developments, Tesco introduced TerraCycle Loop’s reusable packaging scheme to its UK supermarkets, which involves Nivea. The personal care brand also recently brought out renewable face cream jars.
