Bursting with freshness
A BURST-PEEL package for semi-fresh desserts that involves the use of a Surlyn-based film is being heralded as a first for this food product category by Packaging & Industrial Polymers DuPont, of Hemel Hempstead. Italian food producer Barilla wanted an easily opened material with a 'semi-preserve' character, which the high moisture barrier in the Surlyn structure is said to offer.
The PE/Surlyn coextrusion, produced in France by Soplaril, enables the required peel strength to be tailored and provides consistent peel performance says DuPont. It is laminated to a printed and oriented PP at its Italian plant near Milan. The packet is opened by breaking one of the coextruded layers - unusual for peelable films which are simply torn. The process, it is claimed, allows sealing through contaminants and the resin can be sealed at low temperature and high speed.
