Leading Chilean wine producer, Casillero del Diablo, is leading the way in reducing carbon emissions with the introduction of the new Ecoglass lightweight bottle.
The new lighter bottle uses less energy in the production process and requires less fuel to transport it, helping the brand use 2,200 tonnes less glass per annum globally.
More specifically, the new packaging has contributed to a 700 tonne reduction in glass being used for bottles destine for the UK market, which equates to a reduction in the amount of CO2 being used per annum of 140 tonnes.
The first bottling using the new format began in August 2010 in Chile and the lighter bottles will be arriving on UK shelves in October/November 2010. The Diablo wine range is bottled in the bordeaux and burgundy bottle formats and the new Ecoglass bottles, weighing 500g, will reduce the weight of the bottles by 12% and 13% respectively.
In addition to the use of the Ecoglass bottle, Concha y Toro is the first winery in the world to measure its water footprint, in order to determine the total volume and use of water by the company’s productive processes and help design better strategies to mitigate their impact on the environment.
