DuPont Teijin Films’ ovenable packaging film showcased at UK show

A new, heat-sealable, heat-shrinkable ovenable film for use with red meat, pork, poultry, fish and vegetables from polyester film supplier, DuPont Teijin Films is being showcased at the International Food Exhibition, Excell, London.

The CKS film, suitable for horizontal and vertical flow wrap applications, benefits safety, convenience, taste, and costs, Mark Dawes, the company’s market development manager, said. “The dual ovenable film guarantees the safety and quality of meat as well as providing other benefits,” he said.

Thermoformable film

The heat-sealable and thermoformable film means that meat can be packaged in the abattoir and then pass through the distribution change without further direct human contact.

A company statement pointed out: “Public awareness continues to grow around the risks of food poisoning from handling raw meat and fish, with a particular emphasis in the UK around reducing the number of food poisoning cases caused by campylobacter which is commonly found in raw poultry.

“The "No Touch - No Smell - No Fuss" promise (associated with CKS and the Mylar Cook range) allows food packers to deliver food safely from factory to fork and can eliminate the fear of contamination during the preparation of food.”

Since the film packaging fully protects its contents, mixed products can be cooked at the same time on the same appliance without the risking cross contamination between meat, fish and vegetables.

Improved taste and texture are also said to stem from the new film. “Because the cooking takes place within the bag, the quality, texture and flavour of the meat is improved,” said Dawes. “People comment on the intensity of the flavor and the meat requires less salt and seasoning.”

Cost savings

CKF can also deliver significant packaging weight and cost savings, he added.

The film is suitable for use in grills, microwave ovens and conventional ovens.

The Mylar cook range, which includes CKS, has EU food contact approval for use in a microwave or conventional oven. In the United States, the range has received Food Drug Administration (FDA) approval up to 425°F (218°C).

The films are suitable for bag-making machines, horizontal or vertical flow pack or standard roll stock thermoforming.

DuPont Teijin Films is a 50:50 joint venture between DuPont and Teijin.
