Gwalia’s Closure Division Dragon Carves Out a Niche in Big Closures for Food Containers
The 110 mm closures are deigned specifically for polymer food containers, usually PET, they can be manufactured with any commercially available liner, using Dragon’s in-line wadding technology.
26/07/08 The Pontypridd based Gwalia Packaging Group has announced that it has completed a new tooling and dedicated injection moulding project which the company believes makes it one of the UK’s major large diameter closure manufacturers.
The project has been put together by Gwalia’s closure division, Dragon Plastics, and it consists of a 320 tonne dedicated Billion Hercule injection moulding machine together with a multi-cavity stack tool, able to mould large quantities of 110 mm lightweight closures each year.
The 110 mm closures are deigned specifically for polymer food containers, usually PET, they can be manufactured with any commercially available liner, using Dragon’s in-line wadding technology.
Importantly though, the new 110mm closures are 25% lighter than their predecessors and this, according to managing director Rod Parker is “a real light-weighting achievement in both absolute and proportional terms”.
Rod Parker continues, “light-weighting on its own is of course not a particularly constructive objective, and I have seen too many cases of primary packaging being light-weighted, only to create a need to up-weight secondary packaging, flimsy bottles needing greater weight, corrugated cases for example. This is certainly not the case with our new large-diameter closures. We have lightened the product considerably and at the same time we have ensured that integrity and strength have not been sacrificed”.
